The specs for this laptop are pretty impressive, and the build has a nice solid feel to it (aside from the cheap-feeling touchpad), but my unit arrived with a faulty video card. I had made the purchase in spite of well-documented QC issues at HP, and I was punished for my decision. If the unit had actually worked then I'm pretty sure that I would have been happy with it, but it didn't, so I returned it. YMMV.

I went from a Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop to this HP Envy 17. I was really excited to get this laptop, and really did want to like it. Unfortunately, I received not one, but TWO defective units from Amazon. The first shut down and booted up repeatedly at random. The second wobbled on a level surface. Trust me, I tried it on 5 surfaces. The laptops design is great, and build quality could be decent. I say could because with the wobble, and some gaps between the frame and side pieces, it isn't refined. The wobble is a fairly widespread problem, check out the notebookreview.com forum on the envy 17 and you will see just how widespread.

PROS

-Concept
-Build quality (could be great)
-Price
-"Fingerprintless"
-Nice keyboard, plus its backlight
-Slot loading drive

CONS

-Quality control (received 2 defective units)
-Runs HOT
-Sitting next to my Dell Studio XPS 16, the screen looks terrible (the Dell has a WLED backlight screen)
-No play, skip buttons

Overall, I cannot recommend this laptop because of the obvious quality control issues with HP. I'm going back to Dell- Alienware M17X

I am still learning how to use Windows 7 and this new computer. I like the fact that you can web search, check your emails, listen to music and im without starting the operating system. A big mistake I did was use the transfer assistant. I am still trying to get some pictures and screen savers working properly. The use of libraries is a nice organization feature but a nightmare to reorganize from my old computer.
I didn't realize how large the screen is , but once you are used to it its great. Its not too heavy either.
But one reason I went for this vs the dv7 was that the others supposedly overheated. This does run hot when the operating system is on..I warm my fingers!
The key board works well and is easy to use. I love the number pad on the right.

At first glance at the HP 17 Envy listed here on Amazon, the specs of this laptop specify the optical drive listed as a SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support. However, when you scroll further down to additional listed specifications, it says that a blue ray drive is in the computer, not simply the dvd drive. I don't know about anybody else, but this contradiction is unsettling to me and inspired me to do some research. In investigating this matter further, I went on to HP direct and assembled online the HP17 Envy to the exact specifications shown by Amazon w/ the supermulti dvd drive listed, not the blue-ray; the same price, $1,649.00 ,came out for the laptop: this is where things begin to make sense. After this point, I added on the blue-ray player, which added another 100 dollars to the cue, bringing the total to $1749.00. Essentially, I believe that Amazon has elicited false advertising and everyone who ordered this laptop under the pretense they would be receiving a blue-ray player with their shipped Envy, will be opening their delivery boxes to a rude surprise--No blue-ray player.

Here's the company's business model: We have products, people give us money to send the product, but we don't actually have to send the product if we decide to smoke a joint and take the day off. And we will not respond to any issues that take us away from the cartoons. What a company. BEWARE!

I love this new Dell Studio with its large screen. Do not get it mixed up with the Studio XP series which is not a gaming machine. I looked at manufacturer websites, review sites, and YouTube before I made my final decision to purchase my Dell Studio 17. My other Dells all still work, a 2001 desktop,a 2005 Inspiron 17", my daughter's 2004 Inspiron 15", and a cheap used Lattitude I needed to replace a sick workplace Mac desktop that crashed or fried constantly and a T41 laptop that just crumbled at work. My experiences showed Dell would out last these other machines I had worked with. The few problems I have had involved one or two internet connections which really challenged Dell technicians, but were solved by wireless AT&T techs over the phone. This Studio has Intel's i7 processor and 8 gigs of Ram. As a game machine it is so far beyond my other units. I know that desktop is considered the best way to go with gaming, but I hate being bound to a piece of furniture. This machine liberates me. I cannot speak for Dell's online help, and I know their webpage is an unforgiving mess when you try to purchase accessories (they do not understand the term cancel when it comes to an order, and their overseas team seems clueless when it comes to solving problems concerning configuration or sales procedures, plus what they do not understand, they make up. But, my net server knows far more about how to make a Dell do what it should do.) When I do have serious computer problems, it is with my old Mac and my IBM and a local tech is the only way to fix those. Dells survive power surges, drops, and being made to run for weeks without a break. This has at least been my luck with my five Dells. And this big studio blows me away with its graphic's speed, quick start up, crash resistance, slick keyboard (which lights up) and beautiful screen. Aside from my son's two flimsy HPs (they can be trusted to last up to 9 months) and one tough but slow tablet HP from work my experiences may be limited, but this is because of the great success I have had with my five Dells. Quality products, very few problems, pitted against fair to poor online service, and an often dysfunctional homepage: that sums up the good and bad about Dell for me.
